Project Title:
Re-engineering of a telephone exchange with a new processor

Client’s Name (Country):

“BETO,” Ufa, Russia

The Challenge:

The company “BETO” was manufacturing MT-20 type telephone exchanges, which were originally developed by the French company Alcatel in the early 1980’s. Towards the end of the 1990’s the exchange had become outdated, as new communications standards were not supported by the obsolete hardware and software. Such a large volume of this equipment had been installed throughout Russia, that it was being used to serve 3 million consumers. Most of the providers affected by this preferred to upgrade their hardware instead of buying completely new exchanges. So the client required the development of a new exchange processor in order to increase its computational capability and make it possible to append new software modules supporting modern communication standards.

The Solution:

To re-engineer the telephone exchange our team designed a processor with integrated periphery adapters, completely compatible at the hardware/software interface levels with the redesigned equipment. The new platform’s facilities also include main memory and intercomputer communication modules. For the basic components, the Xilinx 4052XL FPGA was used.

Tools and Technologies:

Xilinx 4052XL FPGA, Mentor Graphics tools (Idea Station, QuickSim, BoardStation), Synopsis tools, Xilinx tools (Alianance, Foundation)

Project Duration (months):

26 months
